Greetings stackers. My weekly hiking post had to pause for 2 weeks because I went on a 2 week trip with my family to see Eastern Canada. We flew from Vancouver to Toronto and drove from Toronto all the way to St. John's, NL, the easternmost city of Canada. We travelled many kilometers and saw a lot of beautiful buildings, cities, and natural views. We also went on a hike in Newfoundland, while driving to St. John's, and I would like to share this one with you guys.
We hiked the Chance Cove Coastal Trail located near the small town of Chance Cove, Newfoundland. The trail is a loop trail that is about 3.5km long with almost 100m elevation gain. From the parking lot, there was a clear sign pointing to a set of stairs which mark the start of the hiking trail. Our family decided not to take the stairs and went along Chance Cove Pond instead. Eventually, we reached Chance Cove Beach where the wind was very strong but we've also reached the waters of the Atlantic. We continued up a set of stairs by the beach to continue on the trail and started to enter the coastal forest. The trail was clean and well maintained with numerous outlooks and viewpoints along the way. However, one needs to be very careful when walking into the outlooks, because they are all steep cliffs that will cause serious injury or death if one falls off.

Eventually we reached a grassy area. A sign indicated that it was called the Jacob W Smiths Meadow and that we should watch for whales. The meadows was extremely windy because there were no trees around to block out the wind. I felt that at times, I might get blown away by the the wind. I did, however, get blown away by the unobstructed views of the surrounding islands, rocks, cove and the Atlantic. Going back on trail in the forest past the meadow, we reached a set of stairs that allowed us to walk down to the beach and offered a close view of Chance Island. The cove is much less windy as the surrounding rocks blocked out most of the wind. We enjoyed spending some time skipping rocks on the relative calmer waters at the cove.

Getting back on trail, we continued our way and saw Big Cove and Patrick's Cove. There was a rope that helped hikers go up and down a steep face, allowing them to reach Big Cove and Patrick's Cove. We were short on time and needed to reach our next destination, so we decided not to go down, while only observed the views from above. Continuing past the two coves, we completed the loop trail and went back down the stairs to reach Chance Cove Beach. We followed the same trail next to Chance Cove Pond back to the parking lot.
