Zap to Zero Day 15 | Secret Sauce Live

Today, @Natalia gave me the idea for something similar to SNL.
Instead of going over the top posts of the week (user perspective), I would go over the top code changes of the week (developer perspective). These changes could be about features, bug fixes, etc. But the session could also include recent Github activity — basically anything that is relevant for development of SN. It could also be more of a Q&A style session.
So you could say that I would decrypt our own code and we could call it SN SSL - Secret Source Live:
Welcome to our decoding SN SSL - Secret Source Live ⚡️😂
This is a great name since SSL also stands for Secure Sockets Layer [0] which is (among other security features) about encrypting HTTP traffic:
What is SSL?
SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is an encryption-based Internet security protocol. It was first developed by Netscape in 1995 for the purpose of ensuring privacy, authentication, and data integrity in Internet communications. SSL is the predecessor to the modern TLS encryption used today.
A website that implements SSL/TLS has "HTTPS" in its URL instead of "HTTP."
— Cloudflare, What is SSL?
I am not sure if @Natalia was aware how good the acronym that she picked really was.
I am also not sure if I am actually going to do this. But sounds like a good idea. I guess it depends on how much interest there is for something like this? :)

Seems like I am back on track. Or @grayruby and his mercenaries have overstretched themselves and ran into supply problems, a common mistake.

Recent Superzaps

1. Anita Posch Satsraiser

This must be a blast from the past for @siggy47. I forgot how I landed at this post and I wanted to mark my trail with bookmarks but seems like I didn't ...
Anyway, if you're new on SN or don't know what the cowboy hats mean, check out this post. You might find the secret sauce in there.
Btw, the picture of @siggy47 armchair has burned itself into my brain. Every time I see @siggy47 shitposting, I imagine how he sits in that armchair (like an armchair historian but for SN), smoking a pipe or cigar with a long queue of people who saw the episode with him on @kr's show. They are waiting for him to stop shitposting on SN so he can sign more shitposts that these people printed out because it changed their life. Or something like that.

2. Satsraiser - Running Bitcoin - 10th Jan 2024

Or did I find @siggy47 posts because of this post from @davidw?
He's asking that we shouldn't only run bitcoin but also actually run on the day Hal Finney tweeted this:
If you ask me, that wasn't too much to ask for. So I hope you got your running shoes out (or bought some). And if you didn't, there is still time to donate some sats.
I also didn't watch the Interview with Fran Finney on WBD yet but what I heard, it was pretty incredible. However, what I heard also scared me a little since people really can be assholes:
As I mentioned, sats or no sats, please make sure you watch the What Bitcoin Did interview with Fran Finney, Hal's wife. It was discussed here on SN by @siggy47. It was incredible to hear of her resilience in spite of the immense struggles they both had together. And it is still wonderful to see her smiling and still thinking about Hal each and every day.
But if I ever listen to one WBD episode again, it will be this one.

3. Kevin Mitnick has died

No, he didn't die again. I just didn't know that I am currently reading a book from a person that is no longer with us.
My own bot @hn even posted that link in July 2023 but it didn't catch my attention. That's very sad. I didn't know about Kevin Mitnick until @Gian mentioned his book Art of Deception to me:
Kevin Mitnick is the best teacher, his book: Art of deception is a great lecture for aspiring social engeneers
I instantly fell in love with the book and the writer. That made it especially sad when I found this post.
I almost cried reading through the linked article (maybe I even did?). It felt like I am there, watching him "valiantly battling pancreatic cancer for more than a year". Also, thanks to this HN comment, I also learned that pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers (if not even the deadliest):
Only about 8.5% of patients with pancreatic cancer are alive five years after their diagnosis. This one of the lowest survival rates for any kind of cancer.
— University of Utah, Why Is Pancreatic Cancer So Deadly?
I also want to kick myself in the balls that I didn't actively search for such a book earlier.
I think this is the second death of someone I never really knew but still felt very strong emotions.
The first death was Chester Bennington’s death by suicide:
There is something strange about the pain of losing someone whom you never knew. You did not know them at all and yet, it felt like you knew them so much. They influenced your life in so many little ways and made up such a big part of it without you ever realising.
I remember when the news of Chester Bennington’s passing had broken. The existence of Linkin Park had been pushed somewhere into the obscure recesses of my brain, and when that news broke, it resurfaced, like that mole from carnival games.

Challenge of the Day

Pick up an old hobby. For me, it's playing piano. It has been used to lay my clothes on it for what feels like years.

Song of the Day

Ever get the feeling that you're never all alone? And I remember now At the top of my lungs in my arms, she dies, she dies
At the end of the world or the last thing I see You are never coming home, never coming home Could I? Should I? And all the things that you never ever told me And all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me
Never coming home, never coming home Could I? Should I? And all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me For all the ghosts that are never gonna catch me

Beginning of Secret Sauce Live?
I still have 10min to proofread before posting (and another 10min after posting) because I just posted this and I don't want to pay 33% of my wallet to post this post:

[0] SSL is basically the old name for TLS since TLS is basically SSLv3.
I would love to learn more SSL!
also I got bigger reward than yours 4778, but with 0 post, which made me want to verify my stacking theory with your decoding. 👀
I am also not sure if I am actually going to do this. But sounds like a good idea. I guess it depends on how much interest there is for something like this? :)
I guess it depends on how much fun there is, if with practical tips and tricks, who doesn't like it?

I like seeing more people being petty about being better stackers than @ekzyis.

haha, @Undisciplined would love the SSL, waiting 🥁
@ekzyis it passed 10 mins.

@ekzyis it passed 10 mins.
And I immediately found a mistake. 2024-01-09 is linking back to this post (self-referential) and not to Zap to Zero Day 13
reply
I also don't understand what the Rewarded means here.
reply
If zapping or posting was rewarded that day.
I thought it's obvious and I wanted to save horizontal space lol
reply
then in 01-10 was incorrect too, the last two days was both creators rewards:)
btw how can I find the SN logo or other SN theme design, I looked at the github but no luck so far.

Ohh, I forgot to put ✍️ into the current day! Then it should be correct.

We're using the Lightning Volt Font. You can download it from our Github repo here.
also I got bigger reward than yours 4778, but with 0 post
lol, guess your comments must have been better than my posts
I hope there is no bug but this code worked well for basically ages now — except that one time when it didn't.
reply
which leads me to think the trust must have a lot of weight there, like what users you are interacting with - who zap you. 🤔

Oh, could also be related to what @k00b mentioned here:
It'd be interesting to see what your results would be like if we didn't handicap your zapping rewards. We give ourselves 1/5th the rewards of the lowest reward tier. Your zapping rewards would be ~10x higher otherwise.
I didn't check the code yet but this makes sense. I also usually play games on hard difficulty. I like challenges :)

Sheesh, it's just non-stop excuses from you.

lowest reward tier? I don't quite understand this.
reply
169 sats \ 9 replies \ @k00b 12 Jan
There are 3 trust tiers for zap rewards (more trust, more rewards). Tier 2 gets twice the rewards of Tier 1, Tier 3 twice the rewards of Tier 2.
All the SN team members and accounts get 1/5th of the rewards of Tier 1 - meaning we get 1/20th of the share of zap rewards we'd otherwise get.
reply
how these trust tiers thing works?
like did stackers have their own individual trust score or is more like mentioned by @ekzyis here
zap_trust is your trust [from the PoV of another stacker] which is only earned by historically voting for things other stackers deem are good that stacker deems good.
reply
190 sats \ 7 replies \ @k00b 12 Jan
Every stacker has a global trust score. Rewards use these global trust scores which factor in the PoV of everyone.
Ranking of posts/comments use local trust scores when they're available, ie you're logged in and have a significant affinity for another stacker's zap taste as indicated by your zapping.

Well, guess we have our first topic for SSL #1 :)

yes, could we decode the trust score ( it almost sounds like cowboy credit score )

That’s how I felt when Matthew Perry passed on. I spent my teenage years laughing at the antics of him and his FRIENDS crew, and it’s sad that he died before his time

Tbh, I think you just also like to undersell yourself for reasons I can only speculate about

I struggle with the breakdown of your table although the graph helps visualise things. Part of this is my ignorance of the rewards system with regard to territories. I doubt my inability is shared by many however..
My shortcomings are well founded, frequently assessed and found to be correct lol
