Thanksgiving on the Timechain
Thanksgiving isn’t really a thing where I’m from… at least not the turkey-stuffed American version. But gratitude? Yeah, that translates anywhere. And today I’m feeling it heavy.
So, as I'll be a bit busy with my project, shared here: #1267778, which it's about to launch on Geyser, I wish to express my gratitude for the SN community.
This year, I’m thankful for something a lot of people outside our freedom don’t really get: the SN Territories — those weird, brilliant, chaotic frontiers where we stackers wander like nomads of the timechain, dropping memes, wisdom, shitposts, charts, poetry, code, and the occasional existential crisis.
Every territory has its own personality. Some feel like a quiet late-night IRC channel (~tech, ~devs, ~bitdevs). Some feel like a rowdy village market (~AGORA, ~Memes, ~lol, ~gaming). Some feel like a mastery where monks argue about value and energy (~bitcoin, ~bitcoin_beginners, ~econ, ~bitcoin_Mining). And some feel like living in the comments section of a science documentary narrated by a drunk wizard (~AI, ~aliens_and_UFOs, ~oracle).
And I’m grateful for all of them:
Every territory is a little corner where someone is building, sharing, teaching, bantering, or just trying to figure it out.
But the real reason SN feels like home? The people. The stackers who show up every day and make this weird orange cyber-village actually feel alive.
Massive gratitude to the folks who’ve encouraged me, challenged me, inspired me, orange-pilled me harder, or simply made SN feel less like a website and more like a living campfire around which the whole world gathers:
@k00b, @ek, @sox, @DarthCoin, @Undisciplined, @Justin_shocknet, @siggy47 — and the long, wild caravan of stackers who keep this place buzzing:

Thanks for the sats, the debates, the inspiration, the late-night dopamine hits, the orange wisdom, the chaos, the memes, the code, the stories, the push to be better, and the reminder every single day that Bitcoin isn’t just code — it’s people's power.
See you in the comments. ⚡🧡

There were content based bitcoin payments dating back to 2013, and there was a twitter client that had them around 2021-22, and Sphinx chat had possibly something similar in 2020. But I wasn’t aware of other content based zaps when I made SN. Nostr’s zaps were inspired by SN’s. Although they were the first to call them zaps.
reply
Yes, and also on reddit was a bot for zaps. Is interesting that proposal from Electrum guy with pay to post for nostr.

One of the weirder things about gaining experience in a domain is how invariant the best way to do something can be.
After learning about the main problem with average solutions (related to this thing we're building), I came up with a theory for how to make the average solution better. Then searched for solutions that implement my theory and found something that solves the problem perfectly (I think).

Today is Student's Day in my country. I remember when I was a student I thought it would be permanent lifestyle, staying forever young, every year I'd visit students party on 17th of November. And you know what? Last 5-10 year never been on this kind of parties. About Student's Day remind me someone else, or the very next day (on 18 of November) I read local news about "how cool students party passed".
p.s. enjoy the moment. It's impossible to live it twice

An intoxicating mix of relief and pride swept over me the moment my son’s Parent Teacher Meeting ended.
I only had one concern in my mind, but it has been a gargantuan one that has occupied much of my headspace. You see, I try my best to speak to him in Chinese but he responds to me in English without fail. I feel like I have been pushing a boulder up the language mountain without any success.
His Chinese teacher was quick to allay my anxiety by reassuring me that he communicates to her in Chinese.
I could have suffered a case of sour grapes because he CHOOSES not to talk to me in Chinese, but oh man, I’m just gloriously relieved. I count this as a win.
The PTM could have ended then and there, but his teacher continued to comment that he seems to have a good grasp of knowledge about animals. She even gave an example about how my boy correctly shared that birds have 羽毛 feathers 🪶.
Now, who’s the trusted adult who has been drilling Science facts into his offspring’s head? Me me me!
Thus ends my flexing here.

I'm really curious, where does the white supremacy come from?
I was on a plane with about 6-7 Americans (sorry Stackers, I know many Americans here). Not only do they talk so loud, but they also act like, 'Why can't you speak English?' Even though they were the ones visiting, why not learn some basic words and be respectful, instead of thinking you are the center of everything?
Another thing is that those who usually speak only one language often act as if they know the best. I was around people who easily speak 4-5 languages, yet they are so humble and kind.
What a funny world we are living in!
reply
I haven't traveled abroad very much, but when I did, I was so scared to speak for fear of being 'found out' as an american (or simply foreigner). I think this was shyness, awareness of bad behavior from other americans, and humility in my lack of language practice and cultural knowledge. I even have this cute story when I was visiting a town in England (where they do speak English, so the anxiety was eased). While waiting for a train, I was craving a snack. My traveling partner noticed a shop across the street and encouraged me to go in. I couldn't get myself to do it. We chatted about it for a few moments. And then a girl seated on a bench nearby who was snacking on the very same snack from the same shop that I was too timid to try offered me one of hers. It was sweet, her unexpected kindness I will never forget.

Thanks for sharing the other side of the perspective. 👀
but I'm not against all Americans, I simply don't like the idea that some people think they are above others, yet they are the ignorant ones.
reply
Why do you think it is related to race and not culture?
reply
Yeah, this is a cultural thing. The other white people hate us too.
reply
42 sats \ 1 reply \ @Natalia 17 Nov
The other white people also usually speak one language, perhaps less arrogant, but I really don't understand the mindset that expects everyone to speak English - the world is so big, not to mention that English wasn't even a thing before.
reply
Expectations are borne of experience. English is very widely spoken, so English speakers expect to be able to find someone who speaks it.
Also, most of the other white people speak English and their native language.
reply
good point, culture is def a big part of it
reply
I thought about this some more.
There are very few cultures that do not have either a superiority complex or an inferiority complex (which often results in similar behavior, because the latter will trigger defiance.) This to me is not about "white supremacy" but ultimately about tribalism. My tribe > your tribe. Most tribes will teach this, but some within "tribes" are more susceptible to it than others, and some cultures are more overt / direct in their disrespect than others.
So I think the real question should be: why don't these people from another tribe respect my tribe? I don't have a solution though, except not to spend too much time on these particular individuals and instead seek out those that do respect you.

I am the outsider in this case - I don't belong to either. I speak both languages, and I feel more comfortable with the humble ones; that's why I don't understand those who come to visit yet act like that.

that's not something defined by skin color or culture, it's just ignorance.

of course U.S. is more likely to be bilingual, Spanish is almost like a second official language
reply
You’re in luck, ahahah! I don’t know if you knew this, but until March 1st of this year the U.S. didn’t even have an official language.
Does the U.S. have an official language?
Yes. English was designated as the official language of the United States in an executive order on March 1, 2025.

my mistake, wrong post this is the one about language -> #1283918

If they wanted to fuck the british empire, they would declare US official language as "american" LOL
reply
Hahaha! Yeah, but that’s just a small detail, because in reality all the government paperwork is in English anyway. Government documents are usually written in the official languages.
